Default When should I use top water artificial bait?

I was wondering when i should use top water artificial bait? When im wading in the bay? On the surf? Or how does it compare to live shrimp and mullet?

My gut is that any live bait is probably gonna give you better success...that's just a general feeling though.

I think if you see some fish breaking water, or hitting things on the top, then I'd switch up and try to catch them on the top. I'm also a big fan of top water fishing though...nothing like seeing a fish come up and hit your line and watching it all unfold before your very eyes!

use a topwater in the bay or off docks where the water is calmer. there not really gonna be effective in the surf. a Mirrolure in the lights on the end of a dock at night

where i fish off the pier, speck trouts are more then abundant. but theyre so damn fickle. sometimes they hit, most times they dont. you can see them by the hundreds below the lights ont he pier. but ive tried top water to live bait, to no avail. remember the first time i went out i was like all the trout... then i was like and changed bait. and someone told me good luck catching them and i left like

yeah but at 60 dollars a pop its hard for me to justify getting another one anytime soon. squid is much cheaper for bait fish. and sabiki rigs are only a dollar. i think i like catching lady fish on a sabiki more then anything.... fighting little suckers!
