Default Open vs Closed Kayak?

I've been wanting to give Kayak Fishing a try. There are several lakes and around my area and I think it would be a lot of fun.

What's your suggestion, should I go for an open or closed Kayak? Any other suggestions or tips?

get the kind you sit on top of and not in. they float even if they flip over and there fairly easy to right again.

To me the open makes more sense but you read so many different things. Your comment probably seals the deal though. That makes a lot more sense.

Are the open ones harder to balance since your higher?

a little bit, but you kinda wanna be higher up when your casting. it makes it easier judging distances

Also, they make these outriggers.

I haven't tried them myself, but they might be nice and they look like something you could make yourself for pretty cheap.

I would love to try this style of boating/fishing. I have a local educator who does kayak fishing with his class when they go fishing before the end of the school year. I should be able to attend this year and learn about this opportunity. http://futurefisherman.org

My sit on top is very stable and easy to fish from. I have seen people standing on them to fly fish, which I don't believe you could do from a sit inside. I have a rod holder and lots of room for a beer and tackle. That is all I need. It is easier for me to get on board the sit on top boats also. So it works for me. I have the Kingfish by Mainstream.

I have never used a open kayak before, but for fishing I would say it would be alot better than the closed in type.. being higher up will help with cast, and also easyier to handle bate and the poles along with your paddles..

I used to use a sit on top quite a bit when I lived in Florida, it worked great!
Here on the Canadian border, I think it would be a bit chilly....
